From "So-So" Holidays to a 10/10 Christmas
(HLCS Chapel Devotion on Dec 12, 2025)
Have you ever heard kids around you using the numbers "six-seven" (6-7), often paired with an up-and-down hand gesture? It’s a meme that they have been using all over the place. What does it mean?
-Some say it means “so-so,” especially since kids often pair the phrase with an up-and-down hand motion.
-Others say it refers to the height of a tall person, referring to a basketball player.
But here’s the thing: the term “six seven” is mostly nothing—no sense at all. Which in turn seems to be the point of it. That is: 6-7 is this something that sounds important, a little dramatic, but… ultimately doesn't have a lot of meaning. It's just a thing you do.
Thinking of something that seems to have some meaning, but in the end, loses it, I was thinking about Christmas and what it becomes when Christ is not there anymore. When it is about the prince in me instead of the Baby King; when it is not about a manger, but about some magic. Then Christmas slowly becomes about: Then Christmas slowly becomes about:
• The height of the gift pile under the tree only.
• A “so-so” date—another obligation in an already busy month.
• Just a holiday
• And, perhaps most concerning, something that doesn’t mean much at all.
We can be surrounded by lights and still feel empty. We can be busy and still feel lost. We can celebrate everything—except the One we need most.
If you remove Jesus Christ from Christmas, I would agree—it becomes a 6-7. A so-so, random "holiday" season without its centre, its reason, its Saviour.
My encouragement to you today is to keep front and centre the fact that Christmas is Christ. It is not a so-so date, but it is a perfect 10-10.
The story of Christ's birth is a perfect, complete display of God's love and faithfulness:
This brings us to the ultimate gift of the coming of Messiah for us. We find it in a 10:10 verse, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."(John 10:10). Christmas is a 10/10, perfect celebration because we celebrate the gift of Jesus: God with us.
We celebrate The Savior who came with full grace, full forgiveness, and full life. Christmas is the gift of God to kids, to adults, to everyone. God with us.
That's not so-so. That's salvation..
